Common extension projects
- Widening a single driveway so two cars can park side by side.
- A side parking pad for a third car, a work truck or a golf cart.
- Boat, trailer and RV pads beside the driveway or along the side of the house. For heavy loads see RV pads and slabs.
- A turnaround on a long rural drive so you don't have to back out onto the road.
- A walkway tie-in to the front door. See walkways.
How new concrete meets old concrete
The biggest question on any extension is the joint between the existing driveway and the new pour. Contractors commonly do one of two things:
- Dowels. Holes are drilled into the edge of the old slab and steel bars are set in, so the two slabs move together up and down but are still separated by a joint.
- Expansion or isolation joint. A strip of joint material separates the two slabs so each can move on its own.
Ask your contractor which method they plan to use and why. A crumbling or sunken old edge is often cut back to sound concrete first.
Will it match?
New concrete almost never matches an older driveway exactly at first. New concrete is lighter; the difference usually fades, and pressure washing the old slab helps. If matching matters a lot to you, ask about tinted concrete, a decorative border that separates old and new on purpose, or stamped concrete. If the old driveway is badly cracked or sunken, it may make more sense to replace the whole thing. See driveway replacement.
Planning your extension in Ocala
- Setbacks and HOA rules. Many Ocala and Marion County subdivisions have HOA rules about driveway width, materials and where you can park boats and RVs. Check before you get quotes.
- The street apron and culverts. Widening where the driveway meets the road may affect the public right-of-way, a swale or a culvert pipe. That part commonly needs a permit. See our Marion County permit article.
- Drainage. More concrete means more runoff. The new section should slope so water doesn't run toward the garage, the house or your neighbor's yard.
- Utilities and septic. Mark sprinkler lines, the septic tank and drain field, and call 811 before digging so buried utilities can be located.
- Thickness for the load. Boat and RV pads may need a thicker, more reinforced slab. Say what will park there.
Rough cost (estimates only)
| Job | Typical range (estimate) |
|---|---|
| Plain broom-finish extension | About $6–$12 per sq ft |
| Stamped or colored extension or border | About $12–$20+ per sq ft |
| Cutting back a damaged edge, grass and root removal | Often added to the quote |
These are rough estimate ranges for general planning, not quotes. Small extensions can cost more per square foot because the truck, forms and setup cost about the same as a bigger pour, and many contractors have a minimum charge. Only an on-site, written quote is a real price. See the Ocala driveway cost guide for more detail.
Protect yourself
Ask any contractor for proof of general liability and workers' compensation insurance, a written quote that lists thickness, square footage, finish and what is included, and who pulls any permit. Check the contractor's license status on the Florida DBPR site or with Marion County. Don't pay the full price before the work is done.

Questions people ask
Can a driveway extension be added to my existing concrete?
Usually, yes, if the existing driveway is in fair shape. Contractors tie the new pour in with steel dowels or separate it with an expansion joint. Ask which they plan to use.
Will the new concrete match my old driveway?
Not exactly at first. New concrete is lighter, and the difference usually fades over time. A decorative border or tinted mix can help if matching matters to you.
Do I need a permit to widen my driveway?
Work at the street apron, culvert or right-of-way commonly needs one, and HOAs often have their own rules. Check with Marion County or the City of Ocala and ask who will pull any permit.
